Cleaning recommendations
During this time of increased risk of contracting serious illness, we suggest frequent and regular cleaning of all equipment, props, accessories and other high-touch surfaces.
In order to keep your Merrithew equipment and props clean we recommend using one of the following solutions:
Virox 5
This is a commercial grade disinfectant that is both a virucidal and bactericidal and broad spectrum sanitizer on hard surfaces and is available as a liquid or wipe.
When using this solution, it is important that you allow contact with the surface for 5 minutes to ensure proper cleaning procedure. After 5 minutes, any residue can be wiped away with water and a clean cloth. Note, leaving the solution for longer than 5 minutes has no added benefit. The item may be used as usual once surfaces are completely dry.
The manufacturer recommendation is to pour this liquid onto a clean cotton cloth and wipe surfaces thoroughly. While not the preferred method, the liquid can be applied using a spray bottle, however the liquid will become aerosolized. This is not dangerous, but may cause discomfort in sensitive individuals.
Soiled cotton cloths can be machine washed using hot water. These cloths should be separated from other laundry items.
The manufacturer states this product is non-irritating to the eyes and skin, free of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and contains no toxic ingredients. However, if you have sensitivities to chemicals or scents, we encourage you to review the manufacturer’s information carefully before use. See detailed FAQs from Virox.
Please read and follow all product directions and warnings carefully before use.
Bleach and water solution
The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends a solution of 5 tablespoons (75 ml) of household bleach to 1 gallon (3.8 l) of water as an effective disinfectant that can kill up to 99.9% of germs on surfaces.
To use this method of cleaning, mix the solution and place in a spray bottle. Spray the equipment thoroughly and wipe with a cotton cloth, allow to solution to remain in contact for 10 minutes. Rinse with warm, clean water to remove any residue. Note, leaving the solution for longer than 10 minutes has no added benefit. The item may be used as usual once surfaces are completely dry.
Bleach, even when diluted can remove or change colour from fabrics. To reduce the risk of bleaching fabrics, rinse surfaces thoroughly with water.
Other household cleaning solutions
There are many EPA-approved household cleaning solutions that are effective in killing germs. Without substantial testing, however, we are unable to advise if any of these products will have long-term side effects on Merrithew products. If you do use these products, we recommend thorough rinsing with clean water to remove any residue that may be left behind.
