Continuing education FAQs

STOTT PILATES® Certified Instructors are required to obtain six hours of Merrithew Continuing Education Credits (0.6 CECs) annually to maintain their certification. The following questions and answers help explain the program in more detail.

While CECs are not required for Qualifications in Merrithew’s other branded programs, CORE Total Barre, ZEN•GA® or Halo® Training you may still attend workshops for these brands and earn CECs towards your STOTT PILATES Certification.

Why maintain my certification?

Credible certification is becoming increasingly important to employers, insurance companies and consumers. In fact, experts agree that to ensure long-term sustainability and better service the public, the fitness industry will eventually need to make certification mandatory. STOTT PILATES Certification is well respected in the fitness industry due to our high education standards and our mission to stay on top of new research and industry advancements.

Why have a Continuing Education Credit (CEC) Program?

The STOTT PILATES CEC Program was developed to provide all Certified Instructors and Instructor Trainers with ongoing learning opportunities to keep skills current and maintain a high quality of education. In addition, this will help you stay abreast of the latest advancements in exercise science and the Merrithew repertoire.

How many CECs must I earn annually?

STOTT PILATES Certified Instructors are required to obtain 0.6 CECs (six hours) annually to maintain their certification.

How soon after I receive my certification do I have to start earning annual CECs?

Students have one full calendar year to earn credits, beginning January 1 the year following successful completion of their exam. For example, if you successfully complete your exam in July 2017, your first CEC period begins January 1, 2018 and ends December 31, 2018. Up to 0.2 CECs may be transferred to the following year with a $25 USD/$25 CAD/£15 administration fee (plus tax, where applicable). CECs are not required during the first calendar year following your exam, only CECs taken after the first calendar year after your exam can be transferred. Note, only Merrithew education is transferable.

More than one non STOTT PILATES petition can be submitted however a maximum of 0.2 CECs will be awarded once approved

What if I fail to earn my CECs?

At Merrithew we believe our CEC program is an important part of being a STOTT PILATES Certified Instructor. If a Certified Instructor fails to maintain 0.6 CECs for any of the previous 3 years, their certification status will no longer be considered current, and they will not appear on the Merrithew Instructor Finder.

If my certification status is no longer current, how do I bring it back to a current status?

There are two options available to you:

CEC Extension: If additional time is needed to complete your annual CEC requirement, you may request a temporary CEC extension, which will allow your certification status to remain current for an additional period of time.

CEC Back-Date: If you have earned greater than 0.6 CECs in the current year, or one of the previous 3 years, you may request to have a portion of your CECs back-dated to a year where they are deficient.

How do I request a CEC extension?

If you are unable to complete your annual CEC requirement by the end of the year, you may pay a nominal fee to obtain a temporary extension until May 31st of the following year. During this period, your Certified Instructor status will remain as current.

After this period, if the required CECs have not been earned, your Certified Instructor status will be counted as not current.

The extension fee per 0.2 CECs is $25 USD/CAD, £15 GBP
The extension fee per 0.6 CECs is $75 USD/CAD, £45 GBP

To request an extension, please contact cecs@merrithew.com

How can I have CECs back-dated to a previous year?

If your Certified Instructor status is no longer current, and you have earned greater than 0.6 CECs in the current year, or one of the previous 3 years, you may pay a nominal fee to have a portion of your CECs back-dated to a year where they are deficient.

Once each of the previous 3 years has been credited with 0.6 CECs, your Certified Instructor status will be counted as current.

The back-date fee per 0.2 CECs is $25 USD/CAD, £15 GBP
The back-date fee per 0.6 CECs is $75 USD/CAD, £45 GBP

To request to have CECs back-dated, please contact cecs@merrithew.com

Is there an annual renewal fee?

There is no annual renewal fee. The cost of maintaining your CEC status depends on which CEC option you choose.

What does a customized repertoire review involve?

This involves booking a private session with a Merrithew Instructor Trainer to review basic principles, relevant modifications and/or any Merrithew exercise updates. All 0.6 CECs (6 hrs with an IT) can be earned with a customized repertoire review. Repertoire review sessions may be booked with the CEC Coordinator to be sure your CECs are accounted for. Please be sure to receive your CEC evaluation form from the IT and send this to Merrithew along with the CEC submission form to prove your attendance.

What is a teaching evaluation?

A teaching evaluation involves taking a Merrithew Instructor Trainer through a workout so they may evaluate your teaching abilities and provide you with feedback. A maximum of 0.4 credits can be allocated for teaching evaluation sessions.

How many credits are awarded for a STOTT PILATES Workshop?

This is dependent on the length of the workshop. As a rule, 0.1 credit is awarded per hour of study. For example, 3 hours workshops are worth 0.3 CECs.

How do I gain credits by attending Merrithew Workshops?

When taking a workshop at the Toronto Corporate Training Center, Licensed Training Centers, and Host Centers or at Merrithew workshops or presentations at trade shows, your credits are issued automatically upon completion. You will receive a completion letter from Merrithew 4–6 weeks later stating the CECs earned.

For Merrithew workshops or presentations at trade shows, you are responsible for filling out the sign in sheets for your CEC's to be recorded.

How do I make a submission for my CECs?

You are required to keep track of all your Continuing Education Credits (workshops, videos, petitions, private evaluations etc.) and retain all relevant documents. These, along with a CEC Submission Form, must be received by us no later than December 31 of each year.

Does the course or workshop have to be a Merrithew workshop?

If you have completed a non-Merrithew course or workshop, you may petition for CEC's. Simply send the following information to Merrithew for review:

  • Administration fee ($25.00 USD/CAD, plus applicable taxes)
  • Course description/outline (include number of hours taught for anatomy, biomechanics, exercise physiology or other exercise science)
  • List of course objectives (include number of hours taught for anatomy, biomechanics, exercise physiology or other exercise science)
  • Instructor biography
  • Proof of attendance (Online CEC Petition Form)

Petitions will not be reviewed if all of the above information is not included in the submission. All petitions and documentation must be submitted no later than December 31 for review in the current calendar year. Any petition submitted after this date will incur a backdate fee.

How will I know if my non-Merrithew workshop is approved?

Merrithew cannot guarantee that CECs will be approved for non-Merrithew courses or workshops. Please allow four to six weeks to review your request. You will receive confirmation by email. If you do not receive confirmation, please contact us.

Does auditing a course count toward my CECs?

Graduates and students are welcome to audit courses at the Toronto Corporate Training Center, or any Licensed Training Center. Auditing a course will not count toward your CECs, but is a great way to refresh your memory. To arrange a course audit, contact the appropriate facility.

Can I earn CECs by retaking a Merrithew course or workshop?

Instructors are welcome to retake courses or workshops to earn CECs. While this is a great way to refresh your memory, we suggest that Instructors only retake courses or workshops once. We are continually offering new programming that will help you stay abreast of new content.
