The thickness of the mat is a big deal. It really talks to the kind of exercise you plan to be doing. For example, general fitness mats are about .25 in (6 mm) thick, making them great for push-ups, sit-ups and stretches. Yoga mats are usually around .13 in thick (3 mm), with the heavier ones being up to .25 in (6 mm) thick. Yogis will want to feel a strong connection to the ground during balance poses, so the thinner the mat, the greater that connection will be. Pilates mats need to be the best combination of thick for cushioning, while still firm enough to provide support. More general athletic exercise will need a mat similar to Pilates with thickness and cushion that provides support for wrists, knees, elbows, spines and ankles during reps and stretching. Yoga mats are generally not thick enough for mat-based athletic exercises
There are alternatives to mats with harmful PVCs. Natural rubber is biodegradable, PVC-free and non-toxic, and provides a lot of give and “stickiness,” making it perfect for yoga. Those with latex sensitivities will want an alternative to avoid allergic reactions. Jute is an incredible eco-friendly material that is sweat absorbent and “sticky”, great for Ashtanga, Bikram or other disciplines that cause a lot of sweating. TPE (Thermoplastic elastomers), are an eco-friendly choice. Decomposable, reusable, and 100% recyclable, this type of rubber has a closed-cell construction that can break down in landfills and does not absorb moisture. TPE mats provide supportive cushion with good stickiness, well-suited to Pilates and general fitness rather than yoga. TPE cannot be left out in bright sunlight for extended periods of time
Traction and “stickiness” are key factors in choosing the right mat for your workout. “Stickiness” is key for yoga. A lot of asanas require balancing on the palms or the tips of the fingers. A slick mat can lead to bad form, or even injury due to slipping. The bottom of the mat should lock the mat in place on the floor, while the top should provide a skid-free surface so sweaty hands don’t stray – this will make for a practice that is free of frustration and distractions. For Pilates, stickiness is not a factor, but traction is. Pilates mats should be smooth on one side for sliding movements, while the bottom should be ribbed or textured to stop the mat from sliding across the floor. General athletic exercises require mats with a good grip to accommodate the movements of rapid sets and reps without fear of the mat moving across the floor
Yoga and Pilates are frequently mentioned together, along with other floor-based exercise but each practice demands different mats. Choosing the right mat can help improve your performance – choosing the wrong one can mean slipping, sliding and imbalance. What matters most in a yoga mat is thinness, sweat-absorption, portability and, often for ahimsa-practicing yogis, eco-friendliness. For Pilates practitioners, cushioning, traction and support are more important. For those who are pursuing general fitness, or more athletic exercise, a thicker, firmer mat is best. You will want to make sure your body is supported well during intense exercises like planks, push-ups or bicycle sit-ups. If you anticipate sweating buckets in your workout, consider a closed-cell mat. These do not absorb moisture, making them easy to clean up after a vigorous workout
If you need to grab and go with your mat, the weight, thickness and length of it will matter a great deal. Some mats, like natural rubber mats, can be quite heavy and impractical to carry unless you are driving or have a locker. Commuters on bikes and public transit will prefer a lighter-weight mat that's easily rolled in a mat strap and slung over the shoulder. In these cases, thickness, cushion, and eco-friendliness, should be balanced with weight. PVC mats can be quite lightweight, and TPE mats, depending on thickness, are another option. It's also important to note that professional mats are often denser and heavier, making them more difficult to transport. For thicker mats, a canvas mat bag or duffle style bag is best to protect it from the elements. If you travel often, choose a mat that will easily fit in a suitcase or carry-on
