Student Spotlight: Shawna Cleland

Thinking about training with Merrithew? In our Student Spotlights, we talk to past and current students to get their perspective on training in mindful movement and how they take their skills to the industry.

This week we chat with Shawna Cleland from Hamilton, Ontario, a STOTT PILATES® Certified Instructor, and registered massage therapist (RMT) with the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario.

What brought you into the world of mind-body exercise?

I have over 25 years of experience working, performing and instructing in the dance industry. Dance training provided my first cognitive link between the body and mind. This connection continued to evolve after I became an RMT. I decided to become an instructor because the STOTT PILATES repertoire of intelligent exercise is the perfect complement to enhance my therapeutic practice and mindful movement modality growth.

How have you put your skills to practice in the mind-body exercise industry?

As an RMT, I work with a number of clients who experience musculoskeletal conditions such as motor vehicle injuries, sports related injuries and repetitive strain injury. The STOTT PILATES full certification stream appealed to me because I dreamed about opening up my own studio to treat patients. In 2006 that dream came true and I opened Knead to Balance Massage & Pilates Clinic. Teaching Pilates is a perfect fit to offer my clients a safe and effective approach to exercise.

What are your future plans in mindful movement?

Merrithew's repertoire of intelligent exercise is the perfect complement, to enhance my therapeutic practise and mindful movement modality growth. My goal is to keep growing and learning, all that involves the body, using Merrithew resources. I have become an instructor and successful business owner who has changed people’s lives for the better. It’s in my best interest and in my clients best interest to have as much certification, and knowledge as possible.
