Q. What services do you offer outdoors?

I teach a six-week series called “Pilates with Purpose,” which is a class just for women and their kids. We meet at a park that has a playground, and I keep the group intimate with a maximum of eight participants. During the series we really grow connected while developing our Pilates practice.

Q. What do you feel are the mindful benefits of being outdoors?

The opportunity to be one with nature. I am so fortunate to live in Southern California and can teach outside year-round. My “Pilates with Purpose” class meets at a park overlooking the Pacific Ocean. I try to end the session right at sunset. It's just breathtaking.

Q. When I practice outdoors…

….I involve my kids, breathe fresh air, and enjoy nature.

The feeling of being free, the sensation of liberty, is wonderful and connecting with nature in a mindful way is grounding and restorative.

Q. Does anything unusual happen when teaching outdoors?

We do a block party workout during a local festival each year. It’s a fun energy that can be a little intimidating with so many people watching you workout, but I find the attention really pumps up the class. It’s so fun!

Q. What do you feel are the mindful benefits of being outdoors?

It helps me relieve stress and I love the sun and wind in my face. I feel a deep connection with nature.

Q. What services do you offer outdoors?

We have outdoor spin and Circuit Training classes in the warmer months. We mix all sorts of Matwork into the circuits. They are very popular.

Q. What services do you offer outdoors?

Our studio provides a truly unique experience as we have a large private terrace by the verdant Skansberget. We offer group training, private sessions and courses in both Matwork and Reformer. Our members love the opportunity to train outside, since many of them spend their days at their desks indoors.

Q. What kinds of props do you use outdoors?

We use them all! From Mini Stability Balls, Fitness Circles®, Toning Balls, Flex-Bands®, BOSU® Balance Trainers, and Ankle Tubing – you name it!

Q. Does anything unusual happen when teaching outdoors?

Because we are so close to nature we often have special drop-ins: hedgehogs, birds or cats that want to join the class!

Q. What do you feel are the mindful benefits of being outdoors?

I find that the sun helps you feel so good and lifts your mood! Plus, the sounds of nature, the breeze, the birds, are so relaxing. I find being outdoors the ultimate stress reliever.

Q. What elements from the outdoors do you use in your workouts?

I enjoy parks! My kids of course love to play at the park, but as a parent, I find them a great place to sneak in some exercise. I use the monkey bars (pull-ups), benches (step-ups), stairs (push-ups) and even swings! It’s fun, which is such an important component in life.

Q. What kinds of props do you use outdoors?

Sometimes just the mat, other times Kettlebells, Flex-Bands®, Mini Handweights or a Mini Stability Ball. I like to keep things simple!

…It opens my mind and my practice.

Q. What services do you offer outdoors?

We offer all-year indoor services, but every spring when the temperatures rise, we get outside to the neighborhood parks and playgrounds. Sometimes our clients are hesitant to be out in public, but once they’ve tried it they all agree what a great experience it is.

Q. What do you feel are the mindful benefits of being outdoors?

Fresh air and vitamin D! More and more the tempo of modern life makes us indoor people with less physical activity and exposed to very little daylight. If you take every opportunity to be outdoors, you’ll be surprised at how good you will feel. I find it’s so good for your immune system, mood and stress levels.

Q. What services do you offer outdoors?

We have a rooftop patio, and all of our regularly scheduled yoga classes are on the roof when the weather is warm enough. Our clients love the opportunity to take their practice outdoors. As we emerge out of our long winter in Calgary, everyone seems to move their routines outdoors. This usually means that people leave the studios behind—we love that we can offer people the chance to maintain their practice while still enjoying the beautiful weather.

Q. What do you feel are the mindful benefits of being outdoors?

Being outdoors allows us to leave behind the everyday distractions of life, and we are able to find a calm and inner peace. It isn’t all about being silent, calm and serene. The outdoors gives us an opportunity to take in the subtleties of life and revel in them.

Q. When I practice outdoors…

…I love the way the fresh airs feels on my face and in my lungs and the energy I get from the sunshine.
