Buidling a Pilates Studio Business

When you were training to become a Pilates instructor, the last thing on your mind was how to build your business after becoming certified. You were likely absorbed in learning, enjoying the immersion in something you are passionate about. But now that you've completed your training, it's time to turn your focus on how to make a living doing what you love. According to a 2015 report by the Sports & Fitness Industry Association, there are over 8.5 million Pilates participants in the U.S. alone—this is a great time to get started. In this four-part series, we'll take you through some of the basic steps to building your business from the bottom up.

You've decided to open your own studio, or to open a dedicated Pilates space in your current fitness studio. Now you need to find the perfect space, or make the perfect space in your existing studio. You need as little as 400-800 square feet for a Pilates studio—roughly the size of a racquetball court. With 800 square feet, you can comfortably accommodate a fully-equipped Pilates studio, including four Reformers, two Cadillac Trapeze Tables, four Stability Chairs, two Ladder Barrels, and other accessories. A 400 square foot space can hold approximately four professional Reformers, for a bare-bones Pilates operation.

Consider the location of your studio. Will there be enough foot traffic for a high drop-in rate? Is it close to public transportation, or a parking lot? Will there be any noise or scent concerns from neighboring businesses?

Take a look around at other studio spaces you admire. What are the color schemes? How do they save space and store their accessories? How have they strategically placed decorative elements, and what kind of lighting do they use? There are myriad gorgeous studios with clever designs to model yours on.
