Day 13: A Ladder Barrel warm-up with Master Instructor Trainer Laureen DuBeau

Otiena Ellwand   ·   Feb 26

The Reformer and Cadillac might get most of the attention and glory, but the Ladder Barrel is just as versatile as these better-known pieces of Pilates equipment.

In this video, Merrithew® Master Instructor Trainer Laureen DuBeau explains how you can incorporate the Ladder Barrel into your clients’ warm-up routine.

She demonstrates how to use the Ladder Barrel’s padded surface to provide your clients with complete spinal support when moving into full forward flexion or lateral flexion.

The Ladder Barrel is the largest of Merrithew’s barrels and is a great tool for expanding your programming options. It’s ideal for standing exercises, and can also be used to challenge balance, control and muscular activity. The equipment’s smaller base of support and elevation serve to increase bodyweight resistance, placing more emphasis on upper and lower body stability. It can easily be adjusted to accommodate different heights and flexibility levels.

Often, the Ladder Barrel is seen as being useful for higher-level workouts as some of the exercises can be quite challenging.

However, there are scores of modifications that can be used for beginners, or those clients who need exercises to be modified for them. Using the core exercises in the STOTT PILATES® Movement System, it’s easy to build a routine that will be appropriate in any circumstance.
