  • Programming Protocols for Breast Cancer Rehab  NEW

Course details

Physical activity has been proven to be a powerful, inexpensive, and enjoyable way to prevent many chronic diseases, including cancer. In addition to reducing risk, exercise has been shown to improve survival rates and enhance quality of life for those diagnosed with cancer. Many experts would agree that moving the body utilizing a combination of aerobic, resistance training, and fascial movement therapy is the best prescription. While there is still much to learn about the absolute role various exercise modalities play in disease prevention and chronic disease management, physical activity will likely help make an individual feel better, potentially look better and most certainly move better.

According to the American College of Sports Medicine, it is highly recommended for cancer patients to seek out qualified practitioners who are well versed in cancer care and recovery (1). A qualified, compassionate therapist will teach the cancer patient to become self-reliant, help them improve their physical functional for everyday activities and empower them to live a quality life. Research shows the more physically fit an individual is before, during, and after treatment, the better their results (2).

The goal of this course is to review the most up to date theoretical information regarding breast cancer and the associated side effects. And, to arm movement practitioners with specific Merrithew programming protocols for working with patients through all phases of their cancer journey.

Learning Objectives

  1. Review current global facts and figures
  2. Define breast cancer
  3. Outline the importance of early diagnosis, review detection methods, and identify treatments
  4. Apply the Merrithew programming protocols for both the pre-operative and post-operative stages

Workshop details

The STOTT PILATES® Flowing Sequences with the Conditioning Towel workout provides easy to follow flowing sequences to enhance flexibility, improve strength, and foster dynamic stability for the full body. The Conditioning Towel provides a rich proprioceptive environment to stimulate the central nervous system and maximize results. Each exercise requires greater control through three-dimensional movements targeting the shoulders, hips and torso. This energizing workout will leave you and your clients feeling fit and ready for the day.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify how simple props like a towel can be used to provide support, increase strength, enhance range of motion, and minimize stress throughout the body
  2. Apply the STOTT PILATES Principles to enhance overall strength and mobility

  • Myofascial Continuities: Mapping the Human Design**  SOLD OUT

Workshop details

To manage both basic and complex activities of life and sport, our bodies navigate a complex interplay of variables: alignment, muscular strength, endurance, flexibility, stability, motor control, emotions, and awareness. As movement professionals, it is critical that we recognize and respect these various factors when designing exercise programs for ourselves and our clients. We pay careful attention to the musculoskeletal system, the cardiorespiratory system, and the nervous system, but what about the connective tissue, or the fascia? Where does that fit into our program design? In this workshop, we will explore both past and current data on the body-wide network of structural myofascial continuities (or slings) and how these myofascial connections play a role in proprioception and force transmission to build a strong resilient body. We will explore simple techniques to assess the continuities and then apply movement experientials to stimulate them, creating more fluidity and resiliency through the whole kinematic chain. We will review both conventional and unconventional training methodologies and discuss rationale for selecting specific exercise that help develop dynamic stability and optimize movement.

Learning Objectives

  1. Review past and current data which identifies a body-wide network of structural myofascial continuities, or slings
  2. List the primary myofascial continuities or slings
  3. Define their role in proprioception and mechanical force transmission throughout the body
  4. Assess myofascial continuities to assist in program design
  5. Design programs to enhance dynamic stability and optimize movement at both local and global levels
