Vice President, Finance

Position overview

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Vice President of Finance will be a key member of the senior management team overseeing the Finance, Treasury and Risk Management functions. With increased experience, the position could grow to oversee more administrative and operational activities. A hands-on individual, the Vice President of Finance will be responsible for the management and carrying out of a full range of corporate controllership and day-to-day financial and administrative activities while providing financial management support to all four active and distinct divisions of the company.

Major responsibilities

  • Manage the Company’s financial plans, policies and procedures, internal controls and accounting practices.
  • Providing strategic guidance, based on numerical analysis to the Senior Management Team.
  • Ensure financial and management reporting data is accurate and issued on a timely basis in order to facilitate corporate decision making.
  • Plan and develop the annual operational budget and ensure adherence with only pre-approved variances due to business plan changes.
  • Supervise and participate in the preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements and reporting.
  • Managing the annual external review of the financial statements.
  • Oversee the preparation of US Federal, State, and Canadian income tax returns.
  • Responsible for overseeing the accurate filing of all commodity and payroll tax returns (HST, VAT (where applicable), WSIB, etc).
  • Manages the HR functions of a six-person department spread over two locations.
  • Provides Financial Management to the Studio operations.
  • Ensures that all Merrithew SOPs are complied with.
  • Manage the Treasury and Risk Management activities of the company.
  • Work collaboratively as a financial leader with functional heads across the company.
  • Manage banking and insurance relationships.
  • Develop and maintain a close working relationship with the IT and HR functions.
  • Fosters and champions team spirit amongst head office and plant personnel and encourages input and participation. Participates in and contributes enthusiastically towards the creation and growth of a spirit of openness, trust and respect throughout the entire organization. Influences and learns from below and other departments within Merrithew.

Skills and qualifications

  • CPA, CA with 5 - 8 years’ experience, in an SME owner managed company preferably in the manufacturing sector in a senior finance/accounting role.
  • Must be able to actively participate and provide sound advice and analysis for issues the ownership believe are critical to the business.
  • Cost accounting knowledge.
  • Full budget preparation experience.
  • Strong understanding of tax compliance including commodity, payroll and income tax.
  • Experience in import and export transactions.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment on numerous tasks and priorities at all times. Must be able to roll with the punches.
  • Strong negotiation and contract review skills. Can persuade others with sound arguments that your points are valid.
  • Ability to commute within the GTA.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills along with strong relationship and team building abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop relationships with company business partners.
  • Strong understanding of ERP accounting/manufacturing and payroll software (Company currently operates with SAGE 300, ADP, TaxPrep).
  • Strong business acumen.
