Systems Administrator

Position overview

As part of the Merrithew IT Team, the System Administrator participates in effective provisioning, installation/configuration, operation, and maintenance of enterprise systems hardware, software and related infrastructure. A successful Systems Administrator will protect our critical systems and assets, build solutions, implement new hardware and software, provide training, and assist in developing the overall IT strategy. You will empower breakthrough innovations, take on challenging assignments, lead initiatives, and be responsible for results. You should have an excellent ability to solve problems using your in-depth understanding of information systems and computing solutions. The best system administrator will also be a team player, willing to handle all support requests with courtesy and professionalism.

Major responsibilities

  • Ensure that all computer systems and operations run with optimal performance and security
  • Configure and maintain the networked computer system, including hardware, system software, and applications
  • Monitor data center health using existing management tools, review logs and respond to issues as they arise
  • Strategize and take ownership of a software and security updates system
  • Assist with the migration of the corporate email system from on premise to a hosted Exchange Online service and the implementation of additional Microsoft 365 cloud based services
  • Assist with the implementation of security systems and measures including MFA to safeguard the corporate network and data
  • Ensure the integrity of data storage and backup systems
  • Perform routine and scheduled audits of all systems, including backups
  • Perform server administration and maintenance tasks including user/group creation/update, security permissions, group policies, print services, etc.
  • Work as a member of the IT Team to maintain internal infrastructure including servers, routers, switches, firewalls, laptop and desktop computers, printers, phones, etc.
  • Anticipate potential problems and take action to solve them before they impact users
  • Document processes and procedures pertaining to hardware, software and systems maintenance
  • Prepare step by step guides for users to follow when system changes are introduced
  • Work as a member of the IT Team to provide timely, accurate, and comprehensive technical support to internal staff
  • Any other IT related duties that may be assigned from time to time

Skills and qualifications

  • 5+ years Microsoft Active Directory, including user/group security permissions, group policies, print services
  • 5+ years Microsoft 365 cloud based services, including Exchange Online
  • 5+ years VMware vSphere virtualization platform including vCenter and high availability clusters
  • 5+ years network security hardware and software technologies, including firewalls, anti-virus and anti-malware solutions, email and wireless security
  • 5+ years Windows Server Update Services
  • IT professional certification(s) from Microsoft and VMware preferred
  • Experience with Windows and Mac integration
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Excellent time management skills, detail-oriented and focused
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to prioritize workloads and manage multiple projects at one time
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with evolving priorities and deadlines
  • Desire to work in a collaborative environment with technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds
