Sales Manager, Asia Pacific (Japanese and English Speaking)

Position overview

Located at the Yonge and Eglinton office in Midtown Toronto, this exciting role works in close collaboration with the Sales Director, Asia Pacific (APAC). Your role will be to seek new business opportunities and grow sales through existing key distribution and reseller partnerships and potential customers in Japan and other Asia Pacific countries. You will gain a thorough understanding of Merrithew’s Equipment and Education and cultivate strong relationships with our training center and instructor community. This person will help to facilitate marketing of our products internationally to drive brand awareness and grow market share. Proficiency in Japanese is required and other languages (Korean, Mandarin, Thai) considered a strong asset.

Major responsibilities

Business development

  • Introduction to all existing partners in the market to get a deep understanding of current business throughout the country
  • Analysis and report on opportunities with existing commercial partnerships and any challenges preventing future growth
  • Develop comprehensive market knowledge to identify new direct or reseller sales opportunities
  • Research the various sales channels appropriate for Merrithew products – boutique studios, gyms, spas, high-end condos, etc. and determine a list of opportunities in each segment
  • Prospect new business opportunities using social media resources including LinkedIn and Facebook, and trade associations etc. to do a comprehensive outbound reach to prospective new customers
  • Attend and participate in trade shows, conventions, sales meetings and product seminars


  • Negotiate and secure orders from existing and prospective customers through a relationship-based, consultative sales approach
  • Respond with a sense of urgency to customer and prospect inquiries and prepare written presentations and price quotes
  • Manage the onboarding of all new reseller and distributor partners. Work with the Sales Director, Asia Pacific (APAC) to determine needed tools and procedures
  • Visit existing Training Centers as well as other Resellers and partners, when and where appropriate
  • Develop comprehensive product knowledge of all lines of business to identify competitive features and benefits and favorably present company products and services
  • Report to management on customer needs, problems, interests, competitive activities, and potential for new products and services

Administrative/Customer service

  • Manage forecasts, close deals, and track customer data using company standard CRM tools with an ongoing and accurate sales funnel
  • Work with diverse teams across multiple departments to expedite the resolution of customer and logistical issues
  • Support the Education team with new Hosting opportunities, as needed. Help to edit translated Japanese materials or help translate local promotional offers or other marketing pieces into Japanese. (ie. Social media posts, translated catalogues, etc.)
  • Selling into other countries or other tasks and responsibilities as needed

Skills and qualifications

  • At least 5 years of experience in a Business Development and/or an Account Management Sales role
  • Able to work independently with a proven track record in driving measurable results and exceeding sales targets
  • Strong business judgment and decision-making skills; ability to identify, prioritize and articulate highest impact initiatives for business development
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment
  • Able and willing to travel internationally and domestically as required for the position
  • Superior problem solving, organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and presentation proficiency
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal), both in articulating his/her ideas and gathering input from key stakeholders
  • Sales experience in the fitness industry an asset
