Digital Designer

Position overview

Merrithew is seeking a talented Digital Designer to join our fast-paced in-house design department and lead the digital direction and execution for a multitude of cross-platform channels including e-commerce, web, interactive ads, social, video, UX and more. We’re looking for a candidate that lives and breathes digital design and approaches their work with great care, enthusiasm, and a positive and collaborative attitude.

The Digital Designer will be responsible for conceptualizing and implementing a variety of digital design and integrated design projects as well as some print-based mediums such as packaging, collateral, and ads. This position requires a highly specialized knowledge of graphic design principles and methods, and the candidate should demonstrate a high level of proficiency in the Adobe Creative Suite with expert knowledge of HTML, CSS, Responsive design and UX. As a senior member of the design team, you will play a role in creative brand management and work closely with other designers to grow our digital design capabilities. This role reports to the Art Director.

Major responsibilities

  • Lead the digital design direction working closely with the Art Director to develop results-driven digital creative for a variety of online channels including web, applications, email, display, video, infographics
  • Work closely with the Art Director to implement the company’s core vision and direction, and implement innovative best practices that drive the brand forward
  • Support the Art Director, as needed, in supervising/mentoring designers and freelance resources to promote quality design, influence innovation, and ensure productivity
  • Develop original design concepts for multiple, simultaneous projects that align with marketing requirements and existing branding guidelines
  • Collaborate with the Digital Marketing Manager and internal web team to develop digital design solutions for the overall web presence and specific e-commerce initiatives
  • Provide guidance and leadership on digital design best practices, including designing for multiple platforms and sizes, image optimization, responsive design, UX, mobile, motion, and design systems
  • Photo retouching where necessary
  • Prioritize daily workflow to meet needs and deadlines

Skills and qualifications

  • Degree or certification related to graphic design
  • 5+ years digital design experience
  • 3+ years of experience with Responsive design, including, HTML, CSS and UX best practices
  • Highly proficient in the Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Acrobat), experience with prototyping tools such as Sketch, Adobe XD or Figma and Microsoft Office in a Mac environment
  • Strong knowledge of design concepts – layout, typography, colour theory, etc., as well as a firm grasp of effective file building (digital, print, motion) and pre-production processes
  • Proficient in creatively transforming strategic direction/requirements into visual designs across various channels
  • Experience supervising/mentoring other designers and freelance resources and promoting a positive and collaborative work environment
  • Highly organized, with strong project and time management skills – ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and deliver under tight deadlines
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and within a team environment
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and an ability to copy write for digital mediums a plus
  • Photography experience and photo retouching considered an asset
  • Familiarity with other languages (i.e. French / Spanish / Portuguese / German) considered an asset
