Studio Perspectives by Instructor Trainer (IT), Bernadette Recto
Pilates is experiencing meaningful growth, reaching more people and evolving in how it’s practiced.
Movement has always been central to my life. As a former professional dancer trained in ballet, jazz, modern, and tap, I discovered Pilates through injury recovery. That experience became a turning point that reshaped how I understand movement, wellness, and the body-mind connection. It ultimately led me to open Pilates by Bernadette, a boutique studio focused on intentional movement, personalized instruction, and thoughtful programming.
Bernadette Recto, STOTT PILATES® Instructor Trainer
Today, I’m often asked about the role boutique studios play in the Pilates industry. I think back to a piece of advice from one of my teachers, Master IT Kim Kraushar, when I was moving locations and asked her for guidance. She told me, “There’s enough clients for all.” That simple yet profound perspective continues to guide how I run the studio, reinforcing the idea that different studio models serve different clients and that boutique studios play a distinct, sustainable role within the Pilates world.
Boutique Attention in a Big-Studio World
Across the mainstream fitness landscape, many large studios have emerged offering bigger classes of 15 to 30 people at a time, often with a fast-paced, fitness-oriented vibe. These classes typically follow a consistent format, are energized by upbeat music, and are designed to move many bodies through the room efficiently. This model can be fun, dynamic, and accessible, especially for those who enjoy a high-energy group fitness environment.
In our small-group classes, enrollment is limited to six clients, allowing for a more personalized, supportive, and safety-focused setting. With premium Pilates equipment and guidance from highly qualified, certified instructors, we’re able to closely observe movement, offer individualized cues and corrections, modify exercises in real time, and ensure clients move safely and effectively.
Our classes honor the core principles of Pilates, grounding the work in proper biomechanics and breath. At the same time, we bring in creativity, fusion, and variety so sessions feel fresh, engaging, and energizing.
Small classes turn down the noise and turn up targeted progress.

Programming with an Individual Focus
Boutique Pilates studios work best when there’s enough continuity and instructor attention for progress to accumulate. At Pilates by Bernadette, classes are offered in small-group, private, and semi-private formats, alongside programming for injuries, rehabilitation, and special populations. Many clients arrive through physiotherapists and chiropractors, so sessions begin with a clear understanding of injury history, current limitations, and clear return-to-movement goals.
When sessions connect from week to week, clients can attend once or twice and still feel forward momentum. That individual focus is what lets Pilates support other forms of training, athletic conditioning, and everyday movement. The work in the studio complements modalities like HIIT and weightlifting, supports conditioning across sport and endurance work, and often shows up daily life as movement that feels easier and more efficient.
In practice, using the V2 Max Reformers and Cadillac systems has changed how sessions flow in the studio. Strength work, supported movement, and multi-planar exercises can be adjusted in real time without moving clients or changing machines, increasing range and responsiveness without adding equipment or class size. In a landscape shaped by unlimited access models, this setup supports sustainable outcomes by allowing instructors to focus on what each session needs to accomplish, rather than how often clients attend.
Where Clients Grow & Return
Many of our clients come through word of mouth, drawn to the individualized care boutique studios are known for. Over time, strong, trusting relationships form, and clients often become friends, looking forward to classes together and continuing their practice through different stages of life.
Laughter and fun are part of our daily routine. I truly believe that when the mind is happy, the body moves better. That positive environment supports consistency, confidence, and progress.
Many of our clients have been with us for over 14 years, some bringing family members along the way. We proudly support a wide age range, from 11 to 83 years old. This continuity is what makes the boutique model sustainable and meaningful.
Final Thoughts
Boutique Pilates studios are built on continuity. Consistent instruction, intentional programming, and long-term relationships allow movement to progress over time rather than reset each session.
That continuity supports retention, referrals, and measurable results. When clients build a practice instead of dropping into classes, outcomes improve and engagement deepens.
