International Women’s Day: Celebrating Inspiring Women in Pilates

This month, we’re shining a spotlight on the inspiring journeys of two remarkable women who have turned their passion for Pilates into a force for empowerment. Through mindful movement, they’ve changed lives, overcome challenges and built thriving communities. If you’re an aspiring studio owner, a seasoned professional or simply passionate about Pilates, their stories offer valuable lessons, heartfelt encouragement and a powerful reminder of the transformative impact of movement.

When Natasha Sally Dermawan was first introduced to Pilates, she was captivated by its seamless blend of movement, science and choreography into one powerful practice. To her, Pilates was more than an exercise; it was about deepening body awareness and enhancing overall well-being. Starting her journey as an instructor at just 18, Natasha has since become a Merrithew® Instructor Trainer and the proud owner of Halcyon Studio, a Merrithew Host Training Center.

Navigating Challenges: Motherhood and Entrepreneurship

Like many women entrepreneurs, Natasha struggles to balance motherhood with running a business. “As a mother and studio owner, I’m constantly juggling priorities — making sure I give my full attention to my clients while also being present for my family. It’s not always easy, but it’s about finding a rhythm that works and being kind to myself in the process,” she shares.

Another challenge she encountered — one many female CEOs can relate to — is being taken seriously as a businesswoman. Natasha overcame this by learning to set clear boundaries, standing her ground and trusting her abilities.

Creating a Space Where Everyone Feels Valued

At Halcyon Studio, Natasha and her team are intentional about creating an environment where clients feel safe, supported and celebrated — no matter their background or fitness level. “From the moment someone walks through the door, I want them to feel seen and encouraged. It’s not about perfection; it’s about progress and honoring each person’s unique journey,” she explains.

Leadership Lessons: Advice for Future Studio Owners

Natasha’s experience as both an instructor and business owner has taught her many valuable lessons. Here are her five lessons for anyone considering opening their own studio:

  1. Know Your ‘Why’: Your passion for Pilates will set your studio apart. Always remember why you started.
  2. Invest in Continuous Education: The industry is constantly evolving, and staying updated with workshops and courses will keep your business relevant.
  3. Build a Strong Community: A successful studio isn’t just about the workouts; it’s about creating a space where people feel connected and supported.
  4. Be adaptable: You’ll face adversities, whether competition, market changes or personal hurdles. Stay open-minded and willing to pivot when needed.

Above all, don’t be afraid to take the leap. If you’re truly passionate about it, trust yourself and go for it!

A Client Success Story: The Power of Pilates

One of Natasha’s most memorable clients came to her after undergoing a total knee replacement. Through patience and consistent guidance, the client returned to daily activities and achieved movements she never thought were possible. “Witnessing that transformation reaffirmed my belief in the power of Pilates—it’s not just about fitness; it’s about restoring people’s confidence in their own bodies,” Natasha says.

Partnering with Merrithew — A Trusted Foundation

In an industry where new fitness trends constantly emerge, Merrithew's proven track record caught Natasha’s attention. “Merrithew’s commitment to professionalism, innovation and education aligns perfectly with my philosophy. Their years of experience and dedication to developing high-quality Pilates equipment and training programs give me the confidence that I’m offering my clients the best,” she says.

Equilibrium Studio, Michigan, USA

Students on Reformers at Equilibrium Studio

Nancy Hodari was practicing law and raising four children when a nerve injury led to her third back surgery. The procedure was successful, but she would need a brace to walk. Frustrated with physical therapy, Nancy began exploring alternatives and that’s when she discovered Pilates. After just a few sessions with the legendary Romana Kryzanowska, one of Joseph Pilates’ direct students, she knew right then that she had to bring Pilates to Michigan— which led to her opening Equilibrium Studio, the first Pilates studio in Michigan and the first Merrithew Licensed Training Center (LTC) in US.

The Right Team Over a Business Plan

With over 25 years of experience running Equilibrium Studio, Nancy credits the success of her studio to hiring the right people. A good business plan matters, but the people delivering your vision matter more. Thanks to her team's efforts, every client is treated as an honored guest, building deep relationships based on trust and commitment. According to her, “Time and time again, I hear from both staff and clients that they feel truly seen and heard in our studio—which is the heart of what makes our community so special.”

Hope is Not a Method of Management

As a business owner, Nancy firmly believes that hope is not a strategy. The reality is challenges will arise — and the key is to stay flexible, proactive and see every obstacle as an opportunity to learn and grow. The COVID-19 pandemic presented a major hurdle. Pivoting to virtual training wasn’t easy, but it proved to be a long-term benefit. Today, snowbird clients who head south for the winter can continue their sessions online — something Nancy hadn’t considered before the pandemic. “That ability to adjust is one of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned as an entrepreneur,” she says.

Leadership Lessons: Fostering a Resilient and Motivated Team

After nearly three decades, Nancy’s team feels more like family as they’ve weathered life’s ups and downs together. Here are her top leadership lessons for fellow studio owners:

  1. Stay Adaptable and communicate openly
  2. Cultivate a positive, inclusive work culture
  3. Lead by example
  4. Show genuine appreciation for both staff and clients
  5. Listen to your employees’ concerns
  6. Create opportunities for growth

Seek Real-World Guidance

Nancy advises aspiring studio owners to seek guidance from people with real-world business experience. She also advises against relying too heavily on social media, where everything appears flawless. “Instead, focus on the real people who walk through your door. Prioritize building genuine connections and delivering an exceptional experience—that’s what truly makes a studio thrive,” she shares.

Stories of Strength, Resilience and Community

Over the years, Nancy has witnessed countless success stories. One of the most remarkable examples is that of Mike Luit, a former NHL all-star. Like many professional athletes, Mike faced the looming prospect of orthopedic surgeries after years of intense physical strain. However, his dedication to practicing Pilates three times a week allowed him to avoid surgical intervention. Now, as one of Equilibrium’s strongest advocates, he encourages young players to integrate Pilates into their training, ensuring they build strength, flexibility and resilience to sustain long careers.

Merrithew Stands Out

After meeting with three different Pilates education providers, the decision was clear—Merrithew stood out for Nancy. According to her, “I was impressed with the comprehensive curriculum, complete with manuals, videos and structured course outlines created by Lindsay and Moira.”

Natasha and Nancy’s stories are a testament to the strength, resilience and community that Pilates fosters. Their journeys remind us that Pilates is not just about movement but empowering individuals to live their best lives. With Merrithew’s unwavering support, cutting-edge equipment and world-class education, these entrepreneurs have built thriving studios that uphold the highest standards of excellence.

As we honor these remarkable women, let’s also celebrate the countless others who are making a difference in the world of Pilates and beyond.
