How Pilates is transforming athletes into champions

How Pilates is transforming athletes into champions

In the competitive world of sports, athletes are always searching for an edge—something that can enhance their performance, improve their strength and keep them injury-free. In recent years, Pilates has emerged as a secret weapon, embraced by athletes across various disciplines for its ability to transform the body and mind. Once associated primarily with dancers, Pilates has become a staple in the training regimens of elite athletes, from NFL players to Olympic medalists.

Pilates: The game-changer in sports performance

In 2012, a comprehensive review of 119 peer-reviewed studies on Pilates identified six key components: Breathing, Dynamic Core Stability, Flexibility, Muscle Control, Posture and Strength. These elements make Pilates unique, and it is now widely recognized in the sports world for its ability to improve overall performance.

Unlike traditional strength training that targets large muscle groups, Pilates focuses on functional movement and body alignment. It engages smaller, stabilizing muscles essential for efficient movement and control. This attention to core strength, flexibility and proper alignment helps athletes move more fluidly and powerfully while reducing the risk of injury. The adaptability of Pilates means that it can be tailored to an athlete’s specific needs, whether they're seeking to build strength, enhance mobility or recover from intense training.

Why athletes love Pilates

A recent New York Times article titled "Getting to the core of why NFL players love Pilates" highlights how the practice has expanded beyond its traditional associations. NFL Dolphins linebacker Jaelan Phillips shared, “It makes your body stronger but also makes your mind, soul and spirit stronger. I really leave Pilates with a glow.”

It's not just NFL players who have embraced Pilates – athletes from various sports are incorporating it into their training. Kathleen Baker uses Pilates to prepare for competitions, improving her strength and flexibility. World champion fencer Sergei Golubitsky relies on it for core stability and hip mobility, which are crucial for his sport. Jamaican sprinter Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce turned to Pilates after an unexpected C-section. Less than two years later, she won the gold medal in the 100 meters, clocking a time of 10.71 seconds—her fastest in six years.

These stories illustrate the transformative power of Pilates, showing that it is not just a workout but a holistic approach to building strength, resilience and mental clarity—qualities that are essential for athletes at any level.

Pilates: Boost performance and prevent injuries

While muscular strength and endurance are central to Pilates, they are just one aspect of this comprehensive system. Pilates emphasizes additional elements such as focused breathing, mind-body awareness, alignment and movement integration, creating a strong, fluid and efficient motion. This makes Pilates an ideal choice for enhancing athletic performance and injury prevention.

STOTT PILATES® Athletic Conditioning programs often include four key training components: Activation, Conditioning, Endurance and Recovery. Each component is equally important, with none outweighing the others in significance.

  • Activation: Prepares the body and mind for training by increasing body temperature and mind-body awareness.
  • Conditioning: Progressive sequences that improve coordination, strength and physical capacity.
  • Endurance: Builds stamina, balance and dynamic stability through isometric holds and time under tension.
  • Recovery: Helps manage stress and reduce injury risks through effective recovery strategies, enabling athletes to maintain peak performance.

By integrating these elements into their routine, athletes can improve their physical and mental game, making Pilates a powerful addition to any training plan.

Pilates: Made for every sport

From football to swimming to sprinting, Pilates benefits athletes across all disciplines by enhancing core strength, flexibility and balance. Athletes who incorporate Pilates into their training move more efficiently and maximize their energy, allowing them to perform better and recover faster. My advice to athletes is simple, “If you want to move more effortlessly, utilize the proper amount of tension through your sport and most importantly, don’t waste valuable energy, learn Pilates.”

How Instructors can design workout programs for their athletic clients

To design effective Pilates programs for athletes, instructors must first understand the specific demands of their sport and individual goals. With this foundation, instructors can introduce key Pilates principles such as breathing, alignment and control—essential tools for improving movement and overall performance.

For example, breathing is not just a concept in Pilates; it’s a tool that increases oxygen flow, reduces muscle tension and improves focus. By applying these principles consistently, instructors help athletes build a strong foundation, enabling them to excel in their sport.

My philosophy revolves around the word “LEARN” because I believe that true progress starts with mastering the fundamentals. By prioritizing learning, I emphasize the importance of building a strong foundation through understanding proper techniques. Once these core principles are well-established, athletes can then “earn” their progress. It’s not just about moving to the next level; it’s about earning that progression through dedicated learning and practice. This approach ensures safe development and builds a deep sense of accomplishment and confidence as athletes advance in their sport.
