For October’s Exercise of the Month video, Merrithew® Master Instructor Trainer and physical therapist Wayne Seeto demonstrates a visual assessment of a client’s posture and muscle strength test in order to identify weaknesses and make programming modifications.
For this client, who complained of pain behind her right knee and ankle, he noticed that her pelvis was shifted and elevated to one side, which could suggest some weakness through the right side of her hip abductors.
After assessing her posture while standing, he tested her hip abductor strength. The muscles on her right leg were noticeably weaker.
Here, he takes her through a series of side-lying exercises from the STOTT PILATES® Rehab repertoire, including the Sleeper and Glute Med Targeter on the Footbar.
Tips
- Don’t worry about touching the stopper as the carriage returns in the Sleeper position, it’s more important to maintain a neutral pelvis and spine as you bend your working leg
- If the client is quite weak, the Glute Med Targeter might be enough of a challenge, so make sure to check in with them as you progress
