Making the Most of It: Maximizing Your Reformer Space

Thinking of opening your own Pilates studio? Want to create a designated Pilates space within the studio you already have? With a little planning and creativity, it's possible to create a Pilates profit-center in your current business, or a storefront Pilates studio of a reasonable size that won't sink you in rent payments.

You can create a Pilates studio or designated Pilates space with just 400 – 800 square feet, or the half size or full size of a racquetball court. In an 800 square foot space, you can fit 4 reformers, 2 trapeze tables, 4 Stability Chairs, 2 Ladder Barrels and accessories, while 400 square feet can hold roughly 4 reformers and some accessories. Ideally you'll have space for four to six instructors working at the same time in the same space, offering private, semi-private and group training.

It's important to use your imagination when envisioning your Pilates studio. A racquetball court that is only used a few hours a day could be retrofitted to hold an 800 sq. ft. Pilates “profit center”. By double decking the court, your facility could actually gain 1600 sq. ft. of extra useable space. For a 400 square foot space, all you need is an area you can partition with movable walls, such as an empty office space or utility area.
